HAL is a pull-out program two and one half hours each week for a semester.  Fourth grade
meets first semester and fifth grade meets second semester.  In addition to research skills,
students engage in activities that promote higher level thinking skills while encouraging
independence as a learner.

The goals of the HAL program are:

Goal 1 - Develop an understanding of the research process and demonstrate research and
analytical skills through the completion of an in-depth research project each semester.

Goal 2 - Develop proficiency in productive thinking while demonstrating core thinking skills.

Goal 3 - Demonstrate proficiency in brainstorming (to generate, analyze, and classify responses)
while participating in 3, 5, and 15 minute brainstorm activities in all core content areas.

Goal 4 - Develop an understanding of the decision-making process and demonstrate decision-making
skills while examining a teacher directed topic.

Goal 5 - Actively participate and demonstrate increased learning through a teacher-directed
plan or goal for each quarter utilizing classroom resources in core content areas (with no more
than one quarter in fine arts).

Goal 6 - Utilize appropriate computer software to improve skills in core content areas and study skills.
