The independent study is a research report on a student selected topic.  From the preliminary
outline to gathering notes while compiling a bibliography, students learn how to research and
how to organize information into a research report.

The following steps guide students through the research process:

  1.  Select a research subject.
  2.  Gather notes using who, what, when, where, why, and how questions.
  3.  Compile a working bibliography.
  4.  Write a preliminary focus statement.
  5.  Create a working outline.
  6.  Organize note cards.
  7.  Revise the working outline and write the formal outline.
  8.  Compose an introduction with the focus statement.
  9.  Write topic sentence openers for each main paragraph.
10.  Draft the "sloppy copy."
11.  Write the conclusion.
12.  Create a "snappy title."
13.  Alphabetize and write the formal bibliography.
14.  Edit, revise, and rewrite the paper.
15.  Practice and present with the independent study project.
