SEPTEMBER SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Hearst Foundation/U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship- 1 @ $2,000 (from the state of Nebraska) plus an expenses paid trip to Washington D.C., must hold or have held an elected office in high school (class officer or student council only), must complete a brief test on American and Nebraska Government as a junior or senior.  Deadline:  September

Wells Fargo Financial Services  provides college preparation material and College STEPS for high school students on their website.  You can sign up for electronic postups on various topics, such as college selection or scholarships.  In addition, seniors are eligible for one of 250, $1,000 college scholarships. Sign up by completing a short survey online.

OCTOBER SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Coca-Cola Scholarship Program- 50 @ $20,000, and 100 @ $4,000, based on character, achievement, leadership, extra curricular activities, motivation to serve and succeed, GPA of 3.0 or better.  May apply on-line by accessing website.  Deadline:  October

Horatio Alger Scholarship- 100 @ $2,500 x 4 years, GPA of 2.0, involved in extracurricular activities, strong desire to pursue and complete a higher education, show integrity, hard work, and perseverance in overcoming adversity, must earn a 4-year bachelor's degree (may start at a 2 year college).  Apply online. Deadline:  October

NO-ADdiction Scholarship Essay Contest - 20 @ $500, in 300 words, tell why you have chosen to stay away from drugs and alcohol and what you are personally doing to further prevention and awareness efforts within your school and community, all essays must be typed and double spaced.  Essay must be typed to an official application.  Deadline:  October

Outstanding Students of America- several at $1,000, GPA of at least 3.0, service to your community, school activities, and academic achievements.  Application can be accessed on website.  Deadline:  October

Propa pH Scholarship Contest- $500 to the best answer to the following topic:  "With all the knowledge you would gain from college, how can you see yourself making a change in the world?", one 500 word essay per person, submit to:

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards- 50 @ $1,000, and 10 @ $5,000, must be engaged in exemplary service to your community, essays on impact, inspiration, effort and personal growth from your volunteer service to your community or school.  Deadline:  October

US Bank Online Scholarship- 30 @ 1,000, 2 or 4 year college, selected by a random drawing for those who visit and apply on-line.  Deadline:  Applications accepted online from October - February.

NOVEMBER SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Culinary Institute of America "Cream of the Crop" Scholarship- 5 @ $5,000, 5 @ $1,000, must major in the culinary arts or in the hospitality or food industry in college, must be in the top 10% of high school class.  Deadline:  November

Miss North Central Nebraska Scholarship Pageant-  must be between 17 and 24 years old, must compete in the pageant on November 1, at Keya Paha High School in Springview, Nebraska.  Call Connie Larrington at 402-497-2261 if interested in entering or you want to know all the details.

Nebraska Actuaries Club Scholarship- 1 @ $1,000, must be planning on majoring in a math or actuarial science related field at a Nebraska college, email Max J. Rudolph at max.rudolph@mutualofomaha.com for more information. Deadline:  November

Nebraska Softball Association- several @ $500, must attend a Nebraska college or university, must have played softball in past year, GPA 3.0, school and community activities.  Applications are available online or in the counselor's office.  Deadline:  November

Nomination to U.S. Service Academics- for top students attaining one of our other Service Academics, full tuition, books, and housing plus a living allowance. Deadline:  November

Peter Kiewit Distinguished Scholar Awards- several @ $6,500 x 4 years, must attend a public 4 year college or university in Nebraska, must rank in the top 10% of your class.  Deadline:  November

WSC and Chadron State College RHOP Scholarships- guaranteed admission into a professional health care programs at UNMC in the following areas:

Wayne State College - dental hygiene, dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy.
Chadron State College -  the same fields as WSC with the addition of physicians assistant, radiography, physical therapy, and medical technology.
Full tuition scholarship for three years to the Dentistry and Medicine (physician) programs.

GPA of 3.5, must present an ACT score, must submit application, essay, 3 letters of recommendation, service and leadership activities.  Deadline:  November

ROTC Scholarships- for upper level students (top 20% of your class) who are willing to serve as officers for a period of time in the armed forces upon graduating from college in exchange for full and other benefits.  There is a unique ROTC Scholarship for any student studying nursing.  ROTC is not offered at every college in Nebraska.  Deadline: November

Target All-Around Scholarship- 100 @ $10,000; 1,730 @ $1,000.  The $1,000 scholarships are awarded in communities served by Target stores.  You must have the local Target store location number on your application, GPA of 2.0, volunteer service and verification of those hours.  Applications available online, select "community giving."  Deadline: November

Union Bank and Trust Scholarships- 24 @ $500, top 1/3 of class or an ACT score of at least 20, must attend a post-secondary institution full time the following fall, completion of the online form.  Deadline:  Applications accepted November - March.

UNL Allen Dayton Nebraska Young Entrepreneur Contest- 1 @ $2,000, 1 @ $1,000, 1 @ $500, must attend UNL and enroll in Entrepreneurship 121, must be independent, action-oriented, creative, confident, and opportunity seeking the attributes of a successful entrepreneur.  Deadline:  November

UNL Honors Program- several @ a book stipend for 4 years, 3.5 GPA, ACT 25 or higher. Deadline:  November & March

UNL J.D. Edwards Honors- several @ full tuition, housing, books, renewable if academically successful, interest for technology and business, community involvement, strong communication skills, ACT 31 or higher, top 10% of class, GPA of 3.5.  Deadline:  November

DECEMBER SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Air Force ROTC Scholarships- several full tuition, book fees, living stipend of $250-$400 per month, academic components for the average recipient is as follows:  ACT 27, GPA 3.59, top 9% of class, 25% will major in electrical engineering or meteorology, 50% will major in other engineering or scientific/technical fields, the remaining 25% will major in other fields.  Apply online.  Deadline:  December

ASAP/Union Bank and Trust Scholarships- 20 @ $500, ACT 20, top 1/3 of class, must attend a Nebraska Post-Secondary Institution, printable application available November 1 on website.  Deadline:  December

Hamilton College in Lincoln, NE- 2 @ $5,000. Need to attend a scholarship testing day. Deadline:  December

Imation Computer Arts Scholarships- 25 @ $1,000 and a free trip to Minneapolis, must submit and original work of creative art on a 1.44 MB diskette and be accompanied by two hard copies, must also fill out our regular scholarship application.  Deadline:  December

Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers- 3 national scholarships @ $1,000 for 2 years, 3.5 GPA, ACT of 25 or more.  (Two of these are for females only.)  Deadline:  December

Nebraska Softball Foundation Scholarship- several @ $500, GPA 3.0, must have played softball in the past year, school and community activities. Application online.  Deadline:  December

Norma Ross Walter Scholarship- 1 @ $2,000 for 4 years, must major in English, GPA of 3.0 or better, must be a first year college bound woman.  Deadline:  December

STAATS- 10 @ $500, must be in FFA or 4-H and have exhibited at a County Fair for the past 4 years, GPA 2.5, school and community activities, essay on future goals.  Deadline:  December

Shopko - 100 @ $1,000, 3.5 GPA minimum, based on work experience, academic record, dedication to your community, answers to brief essay questions including an essay on unusual circumstances that have affected your achievement.  May access scholarship application on website. Deadline:  December

Student Challenge Awards Program- seeks students with demonstrated talent in the arts and humanities, and are interested in the sciences.  Students work with scientists, following the daily schedules and research plans for each site.  Visit website for more information.  Deadline:  December

Society of Automotive Engineering Scholarships- several @ varying amounts at several different colleges and universities, ACT of 21 or better, GPA of 3.5 or higher, must study engineering. Deadline:  December

Union Bank and Trust Scholarships- 24 @ $500, top 1/3 of class or an ACT score of at least 20, must attend a post-secondary institution full time the following fall, completion of the online form.  Deadline:  Applications accepted November - March.

UNK Honors/Omaha World Herald/Kearney Hub Scholarships- several @ full tuition and room and board, apply for UNK Honor's Program, ACT 28 or higher, top 10% of class, show significant leadership in co-curricular activities, complete an essay. U.S. Air Force ROTC Nursing Scholarships- full tuition, fees and books, $150 monthly living allowance, must be in top 40% of class, ACT of 24, must have good moral character, must serve 4 to 6 years on active duty as an Air Force officer.  Deadline:  December

U.S. Air Force ROTC Nursing Scholarships- full tuition, fees and books, $150 monthly living allowance, must have a 2.5 GPA and submit a personal statement of interest and reasons for pursuing a 4-year nursing degree, must serve 4 years as a medical officer in the Air Force.  Deadline:  December

US Bank Online Scholarship- 30 @ 1,000, 2 or 4 year college, selected by a random drawing for those who visit and apply on-line.  Deadline:  Applications accepted online from October - February.

Veterans' Tribute Scholarship- 1 @ $10,000, $5,000, and $3,000. Available to children and grandchildren, ages 16-18, of all U.S. military veterans, active duty, Reserves and National Guard.  Awards are given to entrants based on a point system based on their personal academic achievement, family VFW involvement and their parent's military service. WSC John G. Neidhart Scholars Program- 5 @ full tuition plus room and board plus special honors classes at WSC, two letters of recommendation, ACT of 25 or better, top 25% of class, 400- 500 word essay on a selected topic.  Deadline:  December

JANUARY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

A reminder that all UNL, UNO, and UNK Regents (full tuition), President≠s or Chancellor≠s, Canfield, David, and any other academic scholarships from these three schools are due by January 15.  Minimum ACT to receive full tuition starts at 28 or 29.

AAL (Aid Association for Lutherans) Scholarships- many varying from full tuition to a few hundred dollars, must be a member of AAL or have insurance with AAL, must get applications from your local AAL representative. Deadline:  January

Chadron State College Academic Scholarship several at varying amounts, depending on the student's GPA and ACT scores.  Deadline: January

Creighton University- has a priority Academic Scholarships.  Deadline:  January

Elk's National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" Scholarships- 2 @ $60,000, 2 @ $40,000,  2 @ $20,000, 494 @ $4,000, GPA of 3.5, high school transcript, excellent leadership, ACT of 25 or better, 350 word statement of goals, 1 to 3 letters of recommendation, community service, and financial need.  Deadline:  January

FRED Scholarship- several @ $500 - $2,500, GPA of 3.5, ACT 24 or higher, school transcript, 1 letter of recommendation, activities, leadership and community involvement, statement of financial need, essay of 1,000 words or less must cover how living in a rural community has made you the person you are and why you chose the college you plan to attend and what your career goals are.  Deadline:  January

Hastings College Walter Scott Scholarships- 3 @ full tuition, 8 @ $8,000  per year, top alternates are eligible for the Trustee's Scholarship @ $6,800 per year or the President's Scholarship @ $6,300 per year, must be in top 20% of class,
ACT of 26, resume of school and community involvement, strong evidence of leadership, schedule an interview between October 1 and January 26 at the college.  Deadline:  January

Johnson and Whales Culinary Arts University of Denver National Recipe Scholarship-  full tuition scholarship and three partial scholarships in each category, plus a $1,000 scholarship for each state winner, must submit an original recipe and a color photo of your creation for a healthy family dinner or a healthy dessert.  Finalist will be chosen for a cook-off in Denver in March.  Deadline: January

Mensa Education and Research Foundation Scholarship- awards of $300-$1,000, must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution, essay that describes the applicant's career, vocational, or academic goals, it is NOT necessary that the applicant be a member of Mensa.  Deadline:  December

National Peace Essay Contest Scholarship- several awarded each year (the largest amount awarded is $10,000; must be a high school senior, complete a 1,500 word essay on a topic related to peace, further details about the essay and how to write it are on the website.  Deadline: January

Nebraska Elks Association J.C. Ferguson Golf Scholarship- 1@ $500, must participate in high school golf and plan to participate in college golf, ACT scores, GPA of 3.0, 3 letters of recommendation.  Deadline:  January

Nebraska Elks Association Past Exalted Ruler's Scholarship- several @ $700, GPA 3.0, ACT score, activities and community involvement, 3 letters of recommendation, financial need.  Deadline:  January

Nebraska Elk's Past Exalted Ruler's Scholarship - 6 (3 boys, 3 girls) 2 @ $700, 2 @ $500, 2 @ $400, GPA 3.0, financial need, may attend a 2 year, 4 year college or any vocational, technical college.  Deadline:  January

Nebraska Elks Vocational Scholarship -6l @ varied amounts to $1,000, must attend a vocational, technical 1 or 2 year college in Nebraska, 200 word essay on accomplishments activities, and goals, 2 letters of recommendation, Deadline:  January

Nebraska Elks At Large Scholarship - $800, GPA of 3.5.  Must attend a one or two year technical or vocational college.  Based on extracurricular activities and financial need.  Deadline:  January

Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees Scholarships- several at full tuition at WSC, Chadron State, or Peru State, may only apply to one of these colleges for this scholarship, ACT of 25, GPA 3.0, 1 letter of recommendation, must attend college full-time the following fall.  Deadline:  January

Norma Ross Walter Scholarship - 1 @ $2,000 for 4 years, GPA of 3.0, open to female graduates of Nebraska high schools who plan to major in English (journalism not included).  Deadline:  January

Peter Kiewit Legacy Scholarship - 50 @ $7,500 x 4 years, top 20% of class, finacial need (must include the results from the College Estimator in your senior folder), ACT score, honors and awards, work history, extra curricular activities, attend college in Nebraska.  Deadline:  January

Peter Kiewit/Walter Scott Scholarships- several from $3,000 to $7,000 per year for four years if GPA of 3.2 is maintained, must attend the UNO's newly completed Peter Kiewit Institute of Information Science, Technology and Engineering.  (It is a branch of UNO.)  Deadline:  January

Peter Kiewit Foundation Distinguished Scholar Awards- 50 @ $5,000 renewable for four year, must be in top 10% of the class, must attend UNL, UNK, UNO, UNMC, Chadron State, or Peru State College.  Deadline:  January

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship for Future Educators- 3 @ $1,000, must be a graduate of a Northeast Nebraska public high school, must plan to be a teacher, 500-750 word essay, GPA of 3.0 or higher, school and community activities, 2 letters of recommendation, high school transcript.  Deadline:  January

Union Bank and Trust Scholarships- 24 @ $500, top 1/3 of class or an ACT score of at least 20, must attend a post-secondary institution full time the following fall, completion of the online form.  Deadline:  Applications accepted November - March.

UNK Omaha World Herald/ Kearney Hub Scholarships and Honors Programs- several with room waiver, full tuition, fees, and books, ACT of 28 or above, top 10% of high school class, leadership and activities, written essay.  Deadline:  January.  (It is possible to be a part of UNK's Honor's Program without receiving a scholarship.  Requirements are ACT of 26, top 25%, written essay.)

UNL J.D. Education Honors Program in Computer Science and Management- full tuition, room and board, books, fees; GPA of 3.5, ACT of 30, must have applied for UNL Honor's programs, must major in computer science and business.  Deadline:  January

UNO Scholarships- several different types of scholarships available including the Regents Scholarships, Distinguished Scholarships, and Chancellor's Scholarships.  Check them all out and apply online. Deadline:  January

United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship- several @ $1,000, must enroll full time in college, reference letters, 100 to 300 word personal statement.  Deadline:  January

University of South Dakota Academic Scholarships- several full tuition and other varying amounts.  Deadline:  January

NORTHEAST SCHOLARSHIPS
(January Deadlines)

The following **scholarships are for students who plan to attend Northeast Community College next fall.  All of these scholarships must be returned to the counselor's office for a group mailing (refer to senior newsletter for deadline).

** Affiliated Foods-number and amounts of awards vary, must be a son or daughter of an Affiliated employee, GPA 2.0, shows financial need.

**Automotive Technology Advisory Committee-$225, must be a regularly enrolled, full time freshman student, must have a GPA of 2.5 or better, must actively pursue a course of study in automotive technology and exhibit a strong commitment to staying in the automotive technology field, financial need will be considered

** Bank First-1 @ $250, consideration shall be given to employees of Bank First and their children, show financial need

** Diane Bridge Memorial/Norfolk Community Theater Scholarship-1 @ $300, must major in theater.

** Dr. Robert and Helen Cox-1 @ $200, regularly enrolled student.

** Sid and Betty Cox-1 @ $250, students with at least a 3.0 GPA.

**Dale Electronics Scholarship-$700, must be a son or daughter of a Dale's employee, must show academic promise based on a strong GPA.

** Delayne and Betty Deitloff Scholarship-1 @ $300, must study in pre-professional mortuary science.

 **Eagle Scout Scholarship-1 @ $200, must be an Eagle Scout and have active scouting status, need and academic standing will be considered.

**Elkhorn Valley Bank Endowed Nursing-$375, must be an ADN or PN major, financial need will be considered.

**Emergency Medical Services-$200, must be pursuing a program in EMT Basic, intermediate or Technician Paramedic.

**Eleanor Fuhrman-$100, must be a regularly enrolled student at NECC and actively pursuing an NECC course of study.

**Donna Goossen RN/LPN Memorial-$200, must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, must show academic promise, must be enrolled full time in the Associate Degree Nursing or Practical Nursing program at Northeast.

** Home Builders Association of the Norfolk Area-awards vary, must be committed to being a full-time building construction student at Northeast.  Must have a goal of entering the building construction industry upon completion of education.  Financial need and scholastic ability will be considered.

**Nick Hupp Memorial-$200, must be enrolled at Northeast community College, must be seeking a two-year degree in music business, music education, or music performance, financial need will be considered.

**Mason-Krause-$125, regularly enrolled student with financial need.

**McIntosh Minority Scholarship Endowment-awards vary, separate application required, contact guidance counselor or NECC Financial Aid Office, for African-American, American Indian, or Hispanic students who show financial need and academic promise.

** Elmer and Eunice Mohl-1 @ $200, financial need will be considered.

** Elmer and Eunice Mohl Scholarship-1 @ $375, show financial need.

**Norfolk Area Rod and Custom-$300, Nebraska residents majoring in auto body or auto tech.

**Northeast Community College Board of Governor's Scholarship-1 @ 1/2 tuition for four semesters, must have a GPA of 3.0, must be a full time student, must graduate from Pierce High School.

**Northeast Nebraska Medical Association Alliance-$500, must be a full time student in the nursing program, must show scholastic ability, financial need is also considered.

**Peter Kiewit Scholarship-$1,000 multiple awards, these awards were offered the past four years but will not be confirmed for 2004-2005 until later this year, students must be enrolled full time in a vocational training program (NOT transfer program), must NOT have a bachelor's degree, must show documented financial need (FAFSA), must be a U.S. citizen and Nebraska resident, must have a valid high school diploma or GED, must successfully meet the NECC Financial Aid Standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress, recipients may apply a second year, but preference shall be given to students who have not previously received this award.

**Public Power Equipment Show-$500, renewable, must be committed to being a full-time utility line student at NECC in the fall of 2004, must show academic promise and show financial need.

**Lee D. Rawhouser Memorial Scholarship-1 @ $250, must be a full time student, GPA of 2.0 or better, good moral character, financial need is also considered

**Valmont-maximum of $2,000 per year, multiple forgivable loans, for NECC irrigation technology students who wish to complete internships and obtain employment with a Valley Pivot dealer following graduation, must be full-time and maintain a 2.5 GPA, separate application can be obtained from any Valley Pivot dealer.

(January Deadlines)

WSC Leadership Scholarship- room and board at WSC, 2 letters of recommendation required, must have been very active in high school leadership and plan to continue that level of involvement at Wayne State College.  Deadline:  January

WSC Presidential Scholarship- several @ full tuition, ACT of 25 or better.  Deadline:  January

Wayne State College Art Scholarship- up to full tuition, must submit 5 to 10 art work pieces and 5 to 10 slides of art in any media, 2 letters of recommendation.  Deadline:  January

Wayne State College Carhart Scholarship- 1 @ $300, must be returned to the counselor≠s office.  Deadline:  January

WSC Cooperating Schools Scholarship- the number awarded varies from year to year, GPA of 3.0, must complete WSC scholarship application and return to the counselor's office  Deadline:  January

FEBRUARY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Ak-Sar-Ben College Scholarship Program- several @ $4,000 per year for 4 years, must be in top 1/3 of class, must show financial need, two letters of reference, 2 essay questions.  Deadline:  February

Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers- 1 @ $1,000 for 1 year, 1 @ $500 for 1 year, 3.0 GPA, ACT of 25 or more.  Deadline:  February

Briar Cliff Richard Doyle Leadership Scholarship- several @ $1,000 for 4 years, leadership roles in school, church, or community that involve meaningful contribution to the effectiveness of that organization, 2 letters of recommendation, do not need to be present at Scholarship Day in February to apply.  Deadline:  February

Bruce Lee Scholarship - $5,000, 3.0 GPA, essay, bio, also based on Financial need, at least 16 years of age. Deadline:  February.

Caterpillar/Central Community College- 6@ $1,000, Must study in diesel tech. at Hastings campus, 3 letters of reference.  Deadline:  February

Central Community College/Nebraska Machinery Scholarship/Sponsorship Award- 6 @ full tuition, fees, tools, and books x 2 years (approx. value - $8,000), must study Diesel Technology at Hastings Campus of Central Community, must work for Nebraska Machinery Co. for a minimum of 2 years after completing the 2 year program, 2.5 GPA or higher, 3 letters of reference, asset test, brief essay questions on goals, strengths, abilities. Creighton University Muchemore Forensics (speech & debate) Scholarship- 1 @ full tuition, participation in high school speech team, GPA of 3.0, must be willing to compete on Creighton's speech team as a college student.  Deadline:  February

Creighton University Christina Hixson Scholarship- 15 @ $4,500 x 3 years.  ACT 23, 250 word essay, must attend Creighton University, must major in business, preference given to students whose parents aren't college graduates.  Deadline:  February

Dakota Wesleyan University Scholarship- several awards are given up to full tuition, GPA 3.5, ACT 25, must attend the Scholarship Day in February to qualify.

Gates Millennium Scholarship- based on financial need, must be:  African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific or Hispanic American; be a citizen of the U.S., GPA of 3.0, demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.  Deadline:  February

GPACA Scholarship- 3 @ $1,000, ACT 22-28, GPA 3.5, 500 word essay, must attend college in Nebraska, Kansas or Oklahoma. Deadline:  February 15, 2004.

Gus Swanson Memorial Communications Scholarship- 1@$500, must attend a Nebraska college, GPA 3.25, transcript, essay, must major in one of the following:  Advertising, Marketing, Communication Studies, Mass Communications (print or broadcast), Public Relations, Journalism or Graphic Design/Desktop Publishing.  More information in available online. Americorp Education Award- $4,725 college scholarship for 1,700 hours of works for the Americorps National Service in a period of nine months, while working in these U.S. Government sponsored program you will receive in addition to the scholarship award a living allowance, room and board, health care, and will learn skills from construction to tutoring to environmental conservation, first aid among others.  This is an excellent way to learn and earn even through you would need to defer college for one year.  It is something like the Peace Corps except that all the work is done in the USA.  A good way to gain experience and earn college money.  Deadline:  March

NO-ADdiction Campaign Scholarship- 10 @ $1,000, a 300-word essay explaining why you have chosen to stay away from drugs and alcohol. and what you are personally doing for further prevention efforts within your school and community.  Deadline:  April

Nebraska Coaches Association Scholarships- 8 @ $500, ACT of 24, top 25% of class, lettered in 2 varsity sports, participated for 2 years, in 2 sports, letter of recommendation from high school coach.  Deadline:  April

Nebraska Cooperative Council Education Foundation Scholarship- in honor of Michael S. Turner, 3 @ $600-$800 for students entering an agriculture field at UNL, Chadron State, or Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture; will be awarded to sons/daughters of a parent/legal guardian who has been an active member, director, or employee for at the prior 3 years of a cooperative.  Deadline:  April

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Scholarships- 3 @ $100, must have excellent high school record in academics and activities, must be male, must attend UNL and plan to be a fraternity member.  Deadline: April

President's Students Service Challenge Scholarship- 1 @ $1,000, no minimum GPA, must contribute 100 hours of volunteer/learning service to the school and community in a twelve month period.  Deadline:  April

Sallie Mae Parent Answer Scholarship Program- 20 @ $1,000, sweepstakes open to all U.S residents who are parents of undergraduate college students. Apply online between April 10-July 15.

Schering/Key "Will to Win" Asthma Athlete Scholarship- 6@ $5,500, 4 @ $12,500, 1 @ $20,000, must be a high school athlete with asthma who has continued to compete, up to 3 letters of recommendation, essay, list of accomplishments, GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Deadline:  April

Steve F. Wemhoff Memorial Scholarship- 1@ $500, senior from a Northeast Nebraska high school, 3.0 GPA, leadership, financial need may be considered, 3.0 GPA, essay on academic and leadership achievement.  Deadline:  April

Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. Scholarship- 8 @ $1,000, must be the child or step-child of a Tyson employee, top 50% of class, activities, academic record and personal essay. Deadline:  April

UNK Delta Tau Delta Scholarship- 1 @ $100, must be male, must attend UNK, GPA of 3.0, must have achieved academic and community excellence, 2 letters of recommendation, essay.  Deadline:  April

UNL Alpha Gamma Sigma Leadership Award- 1 @ $500, GPA 3.5, must be male, must excel in academics and leadership and service, "great character and moral standards."  Deadline:  April

UNL Acacia Fraternity Scholarship- 1 @ $500, 2 @ $100, must be male, must attend UNL, based on scholarship and leadership, GPA of 3.5.  Deadline:  April

USA Funds Scholarship- several @ $1,500 x 4 years, several for part-time students @ $750.  Must show financial need (total family income of $35,000 a year or less), GPA 2.5, activities, work experience, goals.  Deadline:  April.  Also available to download at www.usafunds.org.

The ~ scholarships below are all sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.  You must be Veteran communicated to apply for them.  That means your father, mother, or grandmother, grandfather, must have served in the Armed Forces.

~Averyl Elaine Keriakedes Memorial Scholarship- amount varies yearly, must attend UNL, be female, and plan to major in social studies education.

~National President's Scholarship-5@ $2,500 and 5@ $2,000, must have 50 hours while in high school to the community verified by a representative of a community organization, GPA of 3.5, character, leadership, and Americanism are considered, 1,000 word essay, letters of reference.  Deadline:  March 1.

~Licensed Practical Nursing Scholarship- 1 @ $400, letter of reference.  Deadline: March

~Nurse's Gift Tuition Scholarship- amount varies every year, reference letter, must study to become a registered nurse.  Deadline: March

~Roberta Stretch Memorial Scholarship- 1 @ $300, reference letters, preference given to Nebraska's Girl's Staters or alternates.  Deadline:  March

~Ruby Paul Campaign Scholarship- amount varies every year, GPA of 3.0, reference letter, must have a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, or great-grandparents who is and has been a member of the American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary for the past 2 years.  Deadline:  March

~Vocational/ Technical Scholarship- 1 @ $300, must enroll in a 1 or 2 year program at a post-secondary college, letters of reference required.  Deadline:  March

Alpha Gamma Nu Scholarship- several @ $500, must be male and attend UNL, based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.  Deadline:  May

The American Legion Oratorical Contest- district winner $100, state winner $1,500, national winner $18,000, $16,000, and $14,000, must prepare and give at a contest a speech on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States.  See Mrs. Birch for a time and date of the local contest.

Educational Communications Scholarships- 127 @ amounts from $1,000 to $6,000, GPA of 3.0, ACT score, also based on community and school activities, honors and awards, work experience, processing fee of $3.00.  Deadline:  May

Faith Regional Scholarship Loan Program- several @ $2,500 per year up to $20,000, must pursue a career in health care, GPA of 2.5, loans can be forgiven upon graduation if you choose to work at Faith Regional.  Deadline:  May

Faith Regional Volunteer Services Scholarship- 2 @ $2,000, must study to be a registered nurse or an ADN, GPA 3.0 or higher, essay on your chosen profession in nursing, activities, awards, work experience, transcript.  Deadline:  May

James M. Cox Foundation Scholarship- several @ $1,000, must have financial need, must reside in the eastern 1/3 of Nebraska, may enroll in private institution, a public or private 2 or 4 year college, the grant is intended to meet the cost of tuition and is paid directly to the college of the student's choice; GPA 2.5; copy of previous year's income tax return.  Deadline:  May

The Kaplan "My Turn" Essay Scholarship Contest- 10 scholarships at $1,000 for 10 outstanding young writers.  See Mrs. Birch for details

Society of Women Engineers Scholarship- 100 from $1,000 to $5,000, GPA 3.5, must attend an accredited University engineering program, application can be downloaded from website.  Deadline:  May
