PRE-ALGEBRA
Grade: 9
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Pre-Algebra is designed for students who have not completed pre-algebra satisfactorily during the eighth grade. Ratios, volume, area, signed numbers, and simple algebraic equations are covered in this course. Pre-algebra is the foundation course for all other advanced high school math courses.
PRE-ALGEBRA II
Grade: 9-10
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Pre-Algebra II is designed for students who need additional work with basic algebra before they continue in Algebra I or Applied Math II. Students receive individual help as needed.
ALGEBRA I
Grades: 9-10
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra (> 80% second semester) & teacher recommendation
Algebra I is designed to prepare the student for advanced math concepts taught in Algebra II and beyond. Solving equations, graphing, algebraic expressions and a brief study of some geometric concepts are covered. Daily homework is required.
GEOMETRY
Grades: 9-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Algebra I (> 80% second semester) & teacher recommendation
Geometry is the study of points, lines, and planes and their interaction in space. The recognition of patterns is an important part of the course. Topics to be covered are similarity and congruence of polygons and circles. Perimeter, area, and volume of shapes will be calculated. Coordinate geometry, formal proofs, and trigonometric relationships will be covered.
ALGEBRA II
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Geometry (> 80% second semester) & teacher recommendation
Algebra II uses algebraic expressions and form for studying functions and modeling real-world situations. Graphing is emphasized, trigonometry is used, and geometry is applied. Graphing calculators are recommended. TI-83 Plus is preferred. TI-89 and TI-92 are not allowed.
PRE-CALCULUS
Grades: 11-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Algebra II (> 80% second semester) & Teacher recommendation.
The basic concepts of trigonometry and analytic geometry are studied. Successful mastery of concepts will prepare the student to enter first year calculus in college. Graphing calculators are recommended. TI-83 Plus is preferred. TI-89 and TI-92 are not allowed.
DISCRETE MATH
Grades: 11- 12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Algebra II & teacher recommendation
Discrete Math is a mathematics course designed for, but not limited to, high school seniors who plan to pursue a post-secondary education, but are not necessarily bound for the traditional calculus sequence. Topics from probability, statistics, and discrete mathematics are dispersed throughout the course in addition to traditional pre-calculus topics. Graphing calculators are recommended. TI-83 Plus is preferred. TI-89 and TI-92 are not allowed. If Pre-Calculus passed with 90% or higher, this class is not for you.
CALCULUS
Grade: 12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus (> 80% second semester) & Teacher recommendation.
Calculus is a branch of mathematical analysis -- the study of functions. The course combines graphical, numerical, and algebraic points of view to clarify concepts and make them concrete. This course is for students, who are interested in mathematics major, or science and engineering major in college. Graphing calculators are recommended. TI-83 Plus is preferred. TI-89 and TI-92 are not allowed.
APPLIED MATHEMATICS I
Grades: 10-11
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Not available to anyone with 10 Algebra credits, teacher recommendation
This course involves using mathematical skills in everyday living experiences. The students learn about the responsibilities of having a job, accumulating interest from a savings account, maintaining a checking account, renting a home or an apartment, paying utilities, shopping for groceries, buying a car, purchasing insurance policies, and paying taxes. A new problem is presented to the students almost everyday. Every problem requires some type of math skill in order to solve it.
APPLIED MATHEMATICS II
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra
Applied Math II is a non-college bound course providing review and continued practice in general math applications, and basic algebra and geometry. Students apply math concepts in a variety of hands-on situations.
CONSUMER MATHEMATICS
Grades: 11-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: None, Teacher recommendation
Consumer Math is a course designed to better prepare students for the mathematical problems to be encountered upon graduation. A review of computational skills will accompany units on personal money records, buying problems, wages, and commissions. Calculators will be used to cover materials concerning borrowing and saving money, home ownership, taxes, insurance and investments.
