INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE
Grades: Any 1st year agriculture student
Length: Year
Prerequiste: None
This course is designed to familiarize the student with most aspects of agriculture including: careers, record keeping, FFA, leadership, animal and plant sciences, natural resources, food and fiber systems, and basic metals. A supervised agricultural experience program is required.
AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro to Ag are given first consideration. Limited to 16 students.
This course is designed to lead the student into mastery of performance within the agricultural industry to include basics of management, types of business arrangements, maintaining and analyzing a record book, international agriculture, marketing strategies for agricultural products, and governmental programs. The class will cover several economic issues that influence all individuals. These issues include basic economic principles, the American business structure, measuring economic performance, GNP and fiscal policy, monetary policy, and international trade.
AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro to Ag are given first consideration. Limited to 12 students.
This course is designed to provide instructional content leading to mastery of performance standard which will include but not limited to metals fabrication, plastics, ceramics, composites, electrical power, engines and machinery. As a result of taking this course you will:
*Develop through observation and demonstration of safety rules and regulations a basis for positive safety attitudes and responsible behavior. *Identify and demonstrate practical skill operation within selected mechanical energy systems. *Identify the component variables, management considerations, and construction procedures related to structural systems. *Select and operate necessary equipment, assemble and disassemble, establish routine maintenance schedules, and safely operate machinery and power equipment. *Identify procedures and practices, and demonstrate skills appropriate for the management of environmental and natural resource systems. *Students will interpret future implications on employment opportunities in mechanical systems careers as a result of emerging technologies.
ANIMAL SCIENCE
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro to Ag are given first consideration. Limited to 16 students.
This course is designed to lead the student into mastery of performance within the animal industry to include the livestock industry, animal health, marketing of livestock and livestock products, livestock nutrition, livestock selection, waste management, small animal care and management.
LEADERSHIP FOR SUCCESS
Grades: 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro to Ag are given first consideration. Limited to 16 students.
Leadership for success is a semester course. Leadership skills will be offered in different areas needed for life skills and career preparation. Oratory, written, and personal leadership skills will be studied and learned. This will include preparing a resume, interviews, and proper attire for different situations, communication, and etiquette for all occasions. There will be a lab fee. This will help cover a formal dinner during an evening or weekend field trip.
METAL TECHNOLOGY
Grades: 11-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Intro. to Ag. or Ag. Mechanics are given first consideration. Limited to 12 students.
This course provides the student with a basic understanding of the oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding procedures. As a result of taking this course you will:
*Develop a hands -on skills in oxyacetylene fusion welding, brazing, braze welding, hard facing and cutting.
*Develop hands-on skills in shielded metal arc welding on mild steel using various electrodes.
*Become knowledgeable and skilled in the gas metal arc welding process.
PLANT & SOIL SCIENCE / NATURAL RESOURCES
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro to Ag are given first consideration. Limited to 16 students.
The first semester will be Plant Science. This will include crop production, range management, horticulture, and floriculture. The second semester will be Natural Resources. This will include conservation, water quality, wildlife management, and other resources. Careers will be discussed in all areas both semesters.
SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Grades: 9-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Those who have taken Intro. to Ag. are given first consideration. Limited to 16 students.
This course has one primary objective; to help you, as a student of agriculture, conduct a quality supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in through a hands-on application of agricultural education. As a result of taking this course you will:
*Develop an understanding of the philosophical, legislative and educational foundations for experiential learning in agriculture.
*Acquire knowledge of the components that comprise Supervised Agricultural Experience programs. *Learn to assist classmates in planning and conducting Supervised Agricultural Experience programs.
*Be able to use and teach others to use a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program Record Book.
*Develop skills in supervising and evaluating Supervised Agricultural Experience programs.
*Properly complete the American FFA Degree application.
*Properly complete proficiency award applications for placement and entrepreneurship proficiency awards.
*Properly complete the agri-science student application.
*Develop agricultural communication skills (verbal, non-verbal and electronically).
VETERINARY SCIENCE
Grades: 10-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Animal Science. Limited to 16 students.
Veterinary Science is a semester class that will cover anatomy and physiology of animals, domestic animal diseases, laboratory practices, examination and treatment, common surgical skills, and business management. The curriculum will be based on the Veterinary Assistant Handbook form Texas A&M University.
