Art Course Descriptions

INTRODUCTION TO ART

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: None

This is for beginning students. This class is to introduce students to various techniques in art and artist in history. Students will have the opportunity to work with basic materials and methods in creating art and understanding art and its influence in everyday life. Nine weeks will be spent working with two-dimensional methods and the remaining nine weeks with three-dimensional mediums. They also are encouraged to take part in various art shows throughout the year including the Mid-State Conference show, which is held in April. Students may be required to purchase some materials.

SCULPTURE

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Sculpture is a semester class of beginning to more advanced study in Sculpture and 3-D design. Students work on introductory levels in clay, sculpture, jewelry casting, paper casting, stone carving, woodcarving, textiles and others types of three dimensional techniques and mediums. Students are encouraged to take part in various art shows throughout the year including the Mid-State Conference show, which is held in April. Students may be required to purchase some materials. Class is limited to 12.

COMPUTER ART

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: Intro to Art or instructor approval

Computer Art is a semester course. Students will be introduced to commercial art as it relates to advertising, logo design, product design, and computer animation. They will be given hands on instruction with computer software such as ClarisWorks, Adobe, Photoshop, Simple Test, Adobe Illustrator, PageMaker, Pagemill, and MetaCreations Ray Dream Studio. They will create advertisements, logos, animated short clips for video, magazine cover designs, and layout. Students may be required to purchase some materials for printing. Class is limited to 10 or on availability of computers.

CERAMICS

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: Intro to Art or instructor approval

This is a semester course in which students will learn to throw basic pottery forms such as bowls, pitchers, plates, and cylinder forms with lids. They will also learn about glaze make up, mold making, slip casting, Raku and kiln loading. They will also use hand built construction techniques to create functional as well as aesthetic and nonfunctional pottery and sculptures. Class is limited to 12.

ADVANCED ART

Grade: 9-12

Length: Year

Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Advanced Art is open to students who would like to do advanced study in a particular medium. Students are to develop a contract with the instructor in a particular area of study or choice of medium. A project or duty list will be drawn up for the semester by the student and instructor to help the student better prepare for a future in art or just for enrichment. Students may be required to purchase some materials.

ADVANCED CERAMICS

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: Ceramics or instructor approval

This is for advanced techniques in ceramics. Students will get to expand their skills and knowledge of clay and the various methods of construction and expression in clay. Students may be required to purchase some materials. Class Size: 12

OIL & ACRYLIC PAINTING

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisite: Intro to Art or instructor approval

This class focuses on painting with acrylics and oil paints and fundamental study of color schemes and painting techniques throughout the semester. Students will work with many aspects of painting including still life, portrait painting, landscapes and abstract compositions. Students will also learn to make their own canvases and frames for display. Students may be required to purchase some materials. Class size: 12-14

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Grades: 9-12

Length: Semester

Prerequisites: Intro to Art

This class is an introduction to artistic photography and includes basic digital photography for computer enhancement and print. The class will study photography and the history of the camera and its artist. Students will learn basic photo enhancement and manipulation with Photoshop 5.0 and other software programs. Students may be required to purchase some materials.
