FRESHMAN ENGLISH

Freshman English is a course, which meets the general English requirements for students in grade 9. The course introduces students to the types of literature and writing skills they will need in later courses. Units include novels, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics, short stories, poetry, drama, and writing. Literature selections are based upon the reading level of the students enrolled.

English 9 is a course, which meets the general English requirements for students in grade 9 following the college prep curriculum. The course introduces students to the types of literature and writing skills they will need in later courses. Units include novels, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics, short stories, poetry, drama, and writing.
SOPHOMORE ENGLISH

Prerequisite: Freshman English
Sophomore English satisfies the general English requirements for students in grade ten. Literature and writing are geared for students who read below grade level. Also after the students work with creative writing, they teach various genre to elementary students.
ENGLISH 10

Prerequisite: English 9
English 10 meets the requirements for college preparation. It is a comprehensive writing course in which the students learn various aspects of writing paragraphs and essays needed for other course work. Also, the students will learn various creative genres in which to express themselves. World literature is emphasized in various forms, including Greek drama, Renaissance Theater, and contemporary drama.
JUNIOR ENGLISH

Prerequisite: Sophomore English
Junior English meets the general English requirements for students in grade 11. It includes contemporary literature by American writers, grammar, punctuation, usage, and vocabulary building. Writing includes the four basic paragraphs and the five-paragraph essay.
ENGLISH 11

Prerequisite: English 10
English 11 meets the general English requirement for students in grade 11 following the college prep curriculum. It includes American literature on a reading level at or above grade level, vocabulary building, language and usage, expository writing, and a major research paper.
SENIOR ENGLISH

Prerequisite: Junior English
Senior English focuses on reading, writing and listening skills. Literary selections are high interest with emphasis on student ability.
ENGLISH 12

Prerequisite: English 11
English 12 is a comprehensive study of English literature and history with a unit on the American Transcendentalists. Independent reading, study skills, and writing assignments are included along with a variety of paperbacks and teacher-developed units.
BASIC ENGLISH
Grade: 12

Prerequisite: English 11 or Junior English
This course is designed to provide senior-level graduating students a final review of all the basic skills of proper communication in the English Language. The course will feature emphasis on writing, reading, listening comprehension, and speaking skills. This course is designed to allow flexibility in topics so as to allow students of differing ability levels to function up to their maximum level of performance.
SPEECH I
Grades: 10-12

Prerequisite: None
Speech I is a one-semester course required of all students. Its purpose is to improve communication skills by researching, organizing, writing and delivering a variety of speeches.
ADVANCED COMP AND CLASSICAL LIT
Grades: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Approval
This course is for those students who have developed an interest in literature. Students have lots of choices concerning selections with emphasis on World and Classical Literature, Shakespeare, books recommended by various colleges, and so call ≥Great Books.≈ Writing assignments are of a critical, analytical, or creative nature. The class is very flexible and based on student input as much as possible. This class is for highly self-motivated students.
CREATIVE WRITING
Grades: 10-12

Prerequisite: None
The purpose of the class is to teach students various modes of writing. The students will learn types of poetry, prose, and script writing for publication. Scripts will be converted into iMovie productions. Six-trait writing will be emphasized for group and self-editing purposes.
DRAMA
Grades: 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: None
The purpose of this first semester class is to teach the students the fundamentals of drama. To achieve this end, the class will produce a one-act play for contest presentation. Acting exercises and reading plays will be done in order to select a play for contest. Students will cast the play, block it, direct, build the set, and create sound effects, etc. necessary for production. Students wishing to be involved in the fall one-act need to sign up for this class.
PREP
Grades: 11-12

Prerequisite: None
Prep is recommended for any student who desires to improve study skills, comprehension, rate and vocabulary. Preparation for the ACT and SAT are covered. ACT, Rate and Vocabulary are done on computer.
JOURNALISM I
Grades: 10-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: None
The purpose of Journalism I is to teach the history and background of the newspaper as well as news writing style. Journalism I students are responsible for the production of The Cardinal and are required to sell and design ads, as well as submit at least one story per issue. Students will also be responsible for the layout of the pages. Good writing, organizational and computer skills are important.
JOURNALISM II
Grade: 12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Journalism I
Journalism II includes yearbook production, copy writing, photography, and advertising. Computer skills are important. Students may be expected to work outside of classroom hours in order to meet yearbook deadlines.
BROADCAST JOURNALISM
Grades: 11-12
Length: Year
Prerequisite: Teacher approval √ class size limited.
Students will study the process of TV production, examine careers in broadcasting, and learn to write news copy. The class will produce KARD news and other special video projects that may become available.
