POLICY
Internet/Intranet Use by Students Code 6163.5
The Boone Central School provides educative and curriculum related opportunities to the students of the district by providing Internet/Intranet to the students of the district. The district, by adopting this policy, recognizes that access to the Internet/Intranet, data available through the Internet/Intranet, and the placing of data onto the Internet/Intranet may be technically difficult to monitor and control. In recognition of the educative and curricular benefits of Internet/Intranet, the school will revoke the privilege of any user who misuses the Internet/Intranet by engaging in activities not related to the educative purposes or to the curricular offerings of the district.
Procedures for making access to the Internet/Intranet available through the Boone Central School may include but are not limited to the following:
1. Completion of training in the use of the Internet/Intranet.
2. Commitment to use the Internet/Intranet for school or educational purposes only.
3. Commitment to respect the ownership of material accessed via the Internet/Intranet, copyright laws.
4. Contract signed by student(s) and parent(s) or guardian(s) that contains a warning that objectionable materials may be accessed via the Internet/Intranet and that neither the school nor its employees can be responsible for student misuse of the Internet/Intranet for prohibited purposes.
User access will be prohibited and revoked as to any person who uses the Internet/Intranet for activities such as, but not limited to, receiving or inputting pornographic materials, promoting violence, engaging in racial, gender or other slurs, receiving or transmitting information pertaining to dangerous instrumentalities such as bombs, automatic weapons, or other illicit firearms, weaponry, or explosive devices, for engaging in uses of a defamatory nature, for personal attacks on or "flaming" of another, for engaging in non-educative or non-curricular related conversations, including chat rooms, and for accessing or inputting items of a strictly entertaining or recreational nature not related to the educative purposes or the curriculum of this district.
Additionally, to the extent that it can be reasonably determined by the administration what fees, if any, have been incurred by a person for non-authorized purposes, it shall be the policy of this district to seek reimbursement and full restitution from the student or his or her parent or guardian, for use of the Internet/Intranet in a manner inconsistent with this policy.
It shall further be policy of this district to provide a copy of this policy to each student user of the Internet/Intranet and to his or her parent or guardian.
E-MAIL POLICY
The student will have a computer user's license issued by a Boone Central School staff member. This will detail school policy concerning the appropriate use of computers for Internet access.
The student will abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette when working with electronic mail. These include but are not limited to the following:
a. Be polite. Do not get abusive in your messages to others.
b. Do not swear, use vulgarities, or any other inappropriate language.
c. Illegal activities are strictly forbidden.
d. Do not reveal your personal address or phone number online.
e. E-mail is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to your mail.
f. Keep your password private, and log off the network after each use.
g. All activity involving your account is your responsibility.
h. Students wanting access to their e-mail will give their Internet license to the appropriate staff member. Example: In the library you will ask to access your e-mail and then give the librarian your internet license. It will be returned when you are finished with your e-mail and you have properly logged off of the computer.
Consequences of inappropriate actions involving e-mail:
1. Automatic notification of any infraction will be made to the parent or guardian.
2. Depending on the severity of the infraction, ANY of the following consequences may be imposed:
a. Conference with parent or guardian.
b. Individual access privileges will be revoked for a period of time up to the duration of the year.
CODE OF RESPONSIBLE COMPUTING
RESPECT FOR PRIVACY
I will respect others' right to privacy. I will only access, look in or use other individual!=s, organization!=s or company!=s information on computer or through telecommunications if I have the permission of the individual, organization or company who owns the information.
RESPECT FOR PROPERTY
I will respect others' property. I will only make changes to or delete computer programs, files or information that belong to others if I have been given permission to do so by the person, organization or company who owns the program, file, or information.
RESPECT FOR OWNERSHIP
I will respect others' rights to ownership and to earn a living for their work. I will only use the computer software, files or information which I own or which I have been given permission to borrow. I will only use software programs which have been paid for or are in the public domain. I will only make a backup copy of computer programs I have purchased and will only use it if my original program is damaged. I will only make copies of computer files and information that I own or have written. I will only sell computer programs which I have written or have been authorized to sell by the author. I will pay the developer or publisher for any shareware programs I decide to use.
RESPECT OF OTHERS AND THE LAW
I will only use computers, software, and related technologies for purposes that are beneficial to others, that are not harmful (physically, financially or otherwise) to others or others!= property, and that are within the law. I understand that misuse of computers, software or data sources will cause me to lose the opportunity of accessing these sources of information at school.
