The Process of Special Education
Home
About

The Special Education Process starts when a parent or teacher notice that a child is struggling in school. The Identification Procedures are put into motion. A Referral is made by a parent or teacher. The student is referred to the SAT team. SAT stands for Student Assistance Team. This group discusses strategies to help the student. If these strategies do not work it may be suggested that the student is tested by a school psychologist. The student is then evaluated by the MDT (multidisciplinary team) staff.
The MDT team follows certain Evaluation Procedures. If a student is verified, the Placement of the student will be decided. An IEP meeting will be set and the IEP team will write an individual education plan for the student. Reevaluation of the student should take place at least every three years. If the student does not meet criteria for verification, a 504 plan is put into place by the regular education staff.
