Every Monday we will have a new
spelling list. There will be 20 words, which include 4 challenge words.
Students will be given a pretest on Monday and the final test on Friday.
We will use the words and practice them throughout the week. Any student
who receives a 100% on the pretest on Monday will not have to take the final
test on Friday. Students are welcome to take their spelling book home over
the weekend to practice the next week's words. Spelling Lists 1-9 are also posted here.

In reading class, students will read a new
group of stories each week. Students should take their book home the first day of every week to read the stories.
Students can read to a parent or other family member. Please check with
your child to make sure they read the stories each week.

In Math, we will begin the year by reviewing the addition and subtraction facts.
It's very important that students know these facts well, so they can continue to
learn harder concepts. Please encourage your child to practice these basic
facts at home to ensure success in math.
During the first semester,
students will be required to read at least 6 books and write a book report for each book. The books must be at least
50 pages each and must be chapter books, and be on the student's reading level. One book MUST be historical fiction
and one must be biography. Students are not to use the Magic Tree House books for historical fiction
or biography, but they can be read for any of the other 4 reports. The books can be from home, the classroom, the school library, or the downtown library. The students have been given a packet of book report forms to fill out. Due dates for the reports are as follows:
September 11
October 3
October 22 - (historical
fiction)
November 6
November 25 - (biography)
December 10
Students completing all of their book reports early should continue to read. Extra book report forms will be available for students to fill out for extra credit in reading.
