NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The National Honor Society is the front runner of organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. College admissions officers often regard Honor Society membership as a valid indicator that the applicant will succeed at the post-secondary education level. The Honor Society member has already exhibited academic achievement, leadership--either overtly or silently--honorable and admirable character, as well as service that demonstrates that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.

Membership in the Twin River Chapter of the National Honor Society is based on four criteria which are the cornerstones of the National Honor Society. They are: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character.

If you meet the scholarship criteria, your name will be submitted to the faculty. They will rate you on a one to six scale in the next three areas, and are instructed to only vote for the students whom they know. One is the best rating that you can attain in any of these areas.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

SCHOLARSHIP: A student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and have an accumulative grade point average of 90% or higher.

DISCIPLINING MEMBERS

A member is never automatically dismissed for failing to maintain standards. But members should understand fully that they are liable for dismissal if they do not maintain the standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character that were used as a basis for their selection. They should also be informed that they are allowed limited warnings during their membership but that in the case of a flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a warning is not necessarily required for dismissal. Furthermore, a student who is dismisssed or who resigns may never again become an Honor Society member.

It is the responsibility of the chapter advisers to periodically review the standing of members for compliance with Society standards. The adviser should inform the errant member in writing of the nature of the violation, the time period given for improvement, and the possible consequence of non-improvement. If the faculty council determines that the facts warrant consideration of dismissal, the member should then be notified in writing of the violation and the possibility of dismissal. A hearing should then be scheduled. A parent/guardian may be present with the member but the primary focus of the hearing should be to allow the member to present his or her case.

If a member is dismissed, written notice of the decision should be sent to the member, his or her parents, and the principal. The member must then surrender the NHS emblem and membership card to the chapter adviser.
