News from the Office

Twin River School District, #63-0030, is in its eighth year of existence. The district consists of three communities: Genoa, Monroe and Silver Creek. The district spans four counties including Nance, Merrick, Platte and Polk totaling 290 square miles. The school recongnizes many-facted diversities of pupil backgrounds, talents and abilities; and, therefore is concerned with the development of the total individual as a self-actualizing, productive citizen. The school community believes it is the responsibility of Twin River Public Schools to provide a continuous, comprehensive curriculum from kindergarten through grade twelve which will develop basic lifetime skills. The general curriculum also includes career and technical guidance, and special education programs. The consolidation is seen as a means to provide the best possible education for our children.

TWIN RIVER BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The Twin River school district provides each classroom and office with an Emergency Response Packet. The purpose of the brochure is to provide employees with a quick reference guide as to what may occur in the event of a crisis. Events such as the sudden death of a teacher or student, natural or accidental disasters, traffic-bus accidents, and real or threatened violence may produce a crisis for students and faculty alike. The guiding principle for any crisis is to return to a normal routine as soon as possible. The brouchure outlines basic guidelines to use in a crisis. These guidelines may not cover every condition that might develop and it may not always be possible or necessary to follow every procedural step. The guidelines are left for independent judgment and discretion. The safety/crisis plans will be shared with staff in an inservice setting. The plans will also be recommended to the BOE to become District policy.

Education Industry is Booming: According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, one in every four residents of the United States over the age of three is attending some type of school. Of students ages five to seventeen, one in ten attend private school and 2 percent are schooled at home. Interestingly, the total number of students in elementary and high schools now exceeds the number of baby boomers who attended school in the 1950s and 1960s. Elementary and high school enrollment today is over 53 million. The peak enrollment during the time baby boomers were in elementary and secondary schools reached only 51.6 million.

A child's world begins at 'home'.

The Monday, September 15th BOE meeting will begin at 7:30 at the 501 Building in Genoa. Topics to include hearing reports from Administrators and staff. Board policies will also be viewed and/or revised. Two hearings will precede the regular meeting. Beginning at 7:00 will be the Budget Hearing and at 7:20 will be the Tax Request Hearing. An agenda of the meeting will be posted on Friday, September 12th at the Central Office. I encourage all patrons to attend each and every meeting.

The Twin River mission statement reads: As an innovative educational system, the mission of the Twin River Public Schools and its communities is to provide opportunity for individuals to become lifelong learners. (Revised, 2005)
