Policies and Expectations
Change starts when someone see's the next step. There are many people, particularly in sports who think that success and excellence are the same thing and they are not the same thing. Excellence is something that is lasting and dependable and largely within a person's control. In contrast, success is perishable and is often outside our control. If you strive for excellence, you will probably be successful eventually. People who put excellence in first place have the patience to end up with success. An additional burden for the victim of the succes mentality is that he/she is threatened by success of others and resents real excellence. In contrast, the person fascinated by quality is excited when he/she see it in others. I believe, we should be focused on excellence, not success.
Anyone can support a team that's winning--it takes no courage. But, to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you, that takes alot of courage. JFK said about courage: "being courageous requires no exceptional qualifications, no magic formula, no special combination of time, place and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all.".
The Role of Sports: When sports becomes about nothing but Pressure, Stress, and Winning, then you've taken all of the fun away. Then it's just a job, and what's the point? Without enjoyment--without finding the real joy in it--it's just Work.
The greatest value of organized high school sports is that it teaches discipline, loyalty, and teamwork. Important as sports are, they are always secondary to the overriding need for a well rounded education.
