Internet Safety Contest - Internet Safety Contest Guidelines


Learning Web -
ESUs statewide have received a grant to implement the Learning Web Project.  A team of five teachers from a school or district in each ESU will create  technology integration projects to support a school improvement goal. 

For example, in support of a reading and/or writing goal, a school may elect to integrate graphic organizers as a research-based comprehension strategy.  The team of teachers may train and create graphic organizers using Inspiration software.

Each ESU is looking for district teams of up to five teachers interested in participating in this project. Participants will need to commit to attending the NETA (Nebraska Education Technology Association) conference in Omaha on April 27-28, 2006,  a regional two-day institute in June, technology training at their local ESU and a follow-up meeting next fall.  In addition, participating schools will be asked to present their projects at NETA in April 2007.

iPod Project - iPod Project Brochure
Opportunity for up to five districts to use an iPod in the classroom and share their experiences. This pilot project is running concurrently with ESUs 1, 2, 7, and 8. Districts that have purchased iPods for the classroom have seen success in improving reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The DIGIES - Fourth Annual Apple Digital Media Competition  

This Apple-sponsored competition showcases the best digital media work by Nebraska K-12 students and educators. There are many digital categories and two age groups. The open category is for those projects that may not fit in one of the other categories. All of the time limits and other restrictions apply to the open category as well.

All projects must be submitted between February 13th and March 24th, 2006.

New Online i-SAFE Professional Development Program
Need to become i-SAFE Certified? In addition to the traditional live PDP workshop, i-Learn Online provides the no-cost i-Safe Professional Development Program training (PDP) online, on demand √ anytime at http://ilearn.isafe.org. Complete the Internet safety topic modules at your convenience. Download and use curriculum materials immediately after each module. Begin with Personal Safety. Once completed, select from the remaining topics in any order. Complete all modules and you are automatically certified to teach all i-SAFE curriculum and facilitate the live i-SAFE PDP. To begin, go to http://ilearn.isafe.org, log-in or create an account, and follow the on-screen instructions.




Firewalls : Status
Most districts firewalls have been installed. Those not installed need to be NATed before continuing with the firewall. Those firewalls will be installed this summer. If your school did not purchase a firewall and now would like to, please email Dan at ellsworth@esu7.org.

Firewalls: Filter
The next step is to install Smart Filter on the firewalls. This will enhance the ability to customize filtering plus take advantage of Smart Reporter, the reporting software purchased along with Smart Filter. Smart Reporter allows setting of multiple filtering policies sets per district.

Firewalls : Architecture
ESU 7 recommends closed firewall architecture. All traffic coming to and from the district will be shutdown and then only what is needed will be opened. This option is by far more secure and better fits district needs.

Firewalls: Documentation
A spreadsheet will be provided for districts that use ESU 7 as their Internet Service Provider. It will include each district≠s external IP address range, how those IPs match with internal IP addresses, and plus their assigned use.


Listservs:
The existing method of configuring listservs has proven not to work efficiently with the new email system as anticipated. Therefore, a new system has been purchased. The old listservs are being  converted to the new system. The new system requires users to include lists in the email address. Example: lanman@esu7.org will now be lanman@lists.esu7.org. An email will be sent to each listserv member informing them of the change as each listserv is converted to the new system.


Training : Apple

Jeff Ochsner has offered to train Apple LAN Managers on Workgroup Manager and Apple Remote Desktop. A two-day course is panned to cover both topics thoroughly. The tentative training date is for early spring. All Apple LAN Managers are strongly encouraged to attend. More information will be sent at a later date.



Computer Standards:

ESU7 personnel and LAN Managers will work to compile a list of computer standards for ESU7 districtss. This is an effort to make technical support more efficient by engineering all school computer networks similarly.


Attendees discussed design of IP networks. Dan suggested organizing the IP networks into a Class B network to categorize different sections of the school. Dan will compile a draft list of network standards for LAN Manager comments and final approval. Discussion of standards will be placed on the agenda for future LAN Manager meetings.



Smart Filter : Site Reviews

When Smart Filter blocks a page, users have an option to submit a site review. The user may submit a request to have the administr review the page and possibly allow the website.

When a site review is sent, a message is mailed to the district administration or LAN Manager. They will determine if the site should be allowed. It is recommended that they first determine that site review request is actually sent by a teacher. A student can easily use a teacher email address or name in the site review and make it appear that it came from a teacher.



Sharing
Mike Peterson, Scotus LAN Manager, demonstrated the Virtual Machines program. It allows users  to emulate a computer system within a computer. It provides a way to try out software before implementatiom, training and troubleshooting purposes.
