Build a Community Web Site
2006/2007 Lindsay Holy Family
Learning Web Team Project

Lindsay Site:

Web Site

http://www.megavision.net/lindsay/
Community Internet Systems, Inc., our local Internet service provider, is hosting our community web site for free.

Original Letters

The third grade class sent letters to citizens of Lindsay, asking for information about Lindsay's history and natural disasters.  The letters also asked for pictures with brief descriptions on the back of the pictures.

Pictures

The seniors in the computer application class took the pictures of the businesses.  The pictures of the disasters and history were sent by mail and were scanned by the seniors, eighth grade, and third grade students.

Summaries

By each picture on the website, there is a brief summary of the picture or business.  The summary information came from people in the community and the 1988 Village of Lindsay Centennial book.  The seniors rewrote, in their own words, a summary on the Lindsay original history and Ms. Jensen chose the best one to go on the website.

Copyright

Copyright, Authors, date of last update, and webmaster contact link is included at the bottom of each page.

Things we learned during web site development:
(Technical stuff)
1.    No spaces in file names!  Some browsers will not act correctly.  This applies to web site (.htm) and picture (.jpg or .gif) files.
2.    Home page should be named index.html or index.htm
3.    Pictures should be stored in a folder under the root web called "images"
4.    Picture size should be the size you are displaying on the web.  Don't resize inside of web site editor.  Manually resize in a photo editor.  We used Gimp 2.2 - free. http://www.gimp.org/ Image, Scale Image.
5.    Lower 'compression' settings when saving .jpg images in photo editor to reduce image size for faster web site loading.  We used 43%.  All images are under 25 kb.
6.    Use tables in your web site editor to lock in picture and text placement.  It will make your page appearance more consistent in different browsers and at different resolutions.  After the web site looks nice, make your table borders the same color as your background to "hide" your table. We used FrontPage. Probably could have used NVU if we wanted a free option.  http://www.nvu.com/index.php
7.    Email entire folders by compressing folder into a zip file.  Right click on the folder and select "Send To" and choose "Compressed (zipped) Folder."  Send the zip and everything should stay intact. Images sub folder and all.
