Class Descriptions

About Home

ENGLISH 8 >>> English 8 will include the study of English grammar, usage, and punctuation as well as literary concepts and composition. Learning in grammar will include the parts of speech, parts of a sentence, phrases, clauses, usage rules, and basic punctuation rules. Students will learn literary concepts through the study of short stories, poetry, and a novel. The writing portion of the class will focus primarily on the descriptive essay and the Six Traits of Writing which is used by the state for evaluation of the State Writing Assessment.

CREATIVE WRITING >>> This course will develop skills and appropriate styles of various forms of fiction, non-fiction, and poetic writing. Students will keep an individual journal as well as create individual and group literary writings, essays of self-expression, and poetry. Students will also explore techniques of marketing their work for publication such as developing query letters and searching for appropriate publishing opportunities for their work.

SHAKESPEARE >>> Shakespeare class will include the study of William Shakespeare's life and the era that he lived in. Students will read and analyze several of Shakespeare's plays such as "Romeo and Juliet," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Julius Caesar," and "Macbeth." Students will gain an understanding of the impact that Shakespeare's writing has had on the English-speaking world.

FRESHMAN COMPOSITION>>> Students in Freshman Composition class will study the writing process and will experience a variety of opportunities for improving their writing skills. Emphasis will be placed on persuasive writing techniques and applying the Six Traits of Writing which will be used to evaluate the State Writing Assessments at the junior level.
