Mrs. Spawn's Classroom
Home
I've enjoyed being your teacher!!! Thanks for your effort and friendship this year! Have a fantastic summer! Remember to keep practicing math facts and reading over the break!
Continue
to send a jacket with your child during the spring months. Sometimes
the weather isn't as warm as predicted by the time students go outside
for recess or P.E.
Reading: New reading skills include contractions and compound words, and word endings (s, ed, ing, ful, ness, etc.). We continue to work on phonics skills such as blends, vowel teams, silent e, and bossy r. Math: Recent math studies have included identifying a cone, a sphere, a cube, and a cylinder; adding three single-digit numbers; rounding a number to the nearest multiple of ten; identifying fractional parts of a whole; and measuring and drawing line segments to the nearest centimeter.
New Math Vocabulary
polygon: a closed, flat shape with straight lines
rectangular prism: a geometric solid with six faces that are rectangles
Social Studies: We have moved into studying maps. Key topics of discussion through the end of the year include: types of maps, map key, map scale, compass rose, cardinal directions, continents, oceans, and globe. We'll also learn about the Nebraska maps and some features of our great state!
Science: We recently dove into ocean studies! We are learning the names and locations of the Earth's oceans, the four zones of the ocean, and what each looks and feels like. We are also doing experiments to discover the characteristics of the salty ocean water, designing a mural, and working with Mrs. Epp (media specialist) to write summary paragraphs about sea creatures.
