About
Due to injuries to starters Miles Korus, Kendal Bender, and Austin
Wegener the St. Francis Flyers took the field with a few new faces. The
new faces delivered big plays all game and defeated the St. Edward
Beavers, 60-0.
In the first half all three of the new starters made their presence
felt. Sophomore Nick Krings, who started at guard on the offensive
line, helped pave the way for Randy Foltz on a quarterback sweep play
for the games' first score. "I really thought our line did the job
tonight," said Krings of himself and the rest of the Flyer's lineman.
Foltz was involved on the next touchdown as well as he delivered a
strike to the speedy Steve Wemhoff for six points. Jameson Werner was a
new starter on defense at middle linebacker but also made some plays
switching in for starting fullback Jacob McPhillips on offense.
Werner's first score was a 24-yard reception from Foltz that was turned
into a touchdown when Werner went airborne over a St. Edward defender
into the end zone. On the next offensive possession it was Werner again
scoring on a long run. "It was a well blocked play and I just ran as
fast as I could," said Werner. Filling in for starting running back
Wegener was Matt Korus. Korus did not disappoint as he took an option
pitch from back-up quarterback Derek Classen and rumbled in for the
next touchdown. As the offense stole the spotlight with its long pass
plays and quick runs, the defense was putting a hurt on quarterback
Shavontae Samuels and the rest of the St. Edward Beavers. The Beavers
did not record any points and had to punt to Cole Classen on many
occasions. On one punt return Cole Classen had to only break one tackle
and did so scoring the last touchdown of the half to make the score
44-0.
The St. Francis starters took the second half off and enjoyed some big
plays from the reserves. Trent Classen found Mitchell Wieser on a fly
pattern for 59-yards and a touchdown. The last score of the night came
from Derek Classen when he faked out a defender and took the ball for a
dazzling touchdown run. The Flyer‚s reserves preserved the shutout on
defense as well. On the night St. Francis played very well defensively.
The Beavers passing attack was non-effective as Flyer defenders picked
off six passes. Randy Foltz and Cole Classen recorded two interceptions
apiece and Bryce Heesacker and Mitchell Wieser got one as well. "Our
defense really prides itself on these shutouts," said Heesacker. The
Flyers through three games have yet to give up a single point.
