The
Humphrey St. Francis Flyers and the Clarkson Red Devils were scheduled
to compete last Friday night. Lightening thwarted any attempt to
play the game that night and the game was rescheduled to Saturday
morning. The Flyers won the contest with highly rated Clarkson,
30-28.
The game got underway as the
Flyers won the toss and chose to receive the football. Unable to get
anything going for them, the Flyers were forced to punt. The Red Devils
drove downfield to draw first blood of the ball game, scoring on a 15
yard run by Michael Konicek. The 2 point play failed.
The
rest of the first quarter was a defensive battle with no more points
being scored by Clarkson. In the second quarter the Flyers were able to
put points on the board as they drove the field to set up a 3 yard
touchdown reception by Cole Classen. Classen also caught the 2 point
conversion thrown by senior quarterback Randy Foltz.
Then
the Flyers came out and made another stop on defense. This time though
it wasn't a battle of defenses and the Flyers were able to move the
ball until senior Steve Wemhoff was found by Foltz for his second
touchdown pass of the day. Foltz said, "I couldn't do it without my
blockers doing an amazing job." The 2 point play failed.
The
Flyer defense was once again able to stop the Red Devils forcing a
turnover on downs. This set up another touchdown when junior Jameson
Werner ran the ball 36 yards for another Flyer touchdown. Classen
caught the 2 point conversion making the score 22-6 Flyers.
The
Red Devils were determined to not go into half time without one more
score. Brandon Dinslage found Corbin Hamernik open for a 54
yard touchdown pass. Dinslage ran in the 2 point conversion making the
score 22-14 at the half.
The
3rd quarter was scoreless with both teams trying to pound the ball at
each other without success.
To
start off the 4th quarter the Red Devils scored on a 5 yard run by
Konicek. The 2 point play failed.
The Red
Devils had seemingly taken control until on the ensuing kickoff Foltz
ran 78 yards for the touchdown. The 2 point conversion was caught by
Wemhoff and the score was now 30-20.
The
determined Red Devils scored on their next drive with a 34 yard pass
from Dinslage to Hamernik. The 2 point play was run in by Eric Brabec.
The
Flyers then tried to hold out and run the clock. They were unable
to and the ball was punted away by Classen. The Red Devils lost
the ball on a trick play and the Flyers recovered. Clarkson used
their timeouts to force St. Francis to punt to them one last
time. With 4 seconds remaining, Dinslage threw up a desperation
pass that was deflected to the ground as time expired. The
scoreboard showed the final score of 30-28.
The
Flyers will play at Leigh on Friday, October 19th with kick off at 7:00
PM.
