Required Materials

Textbook: Glencoe Writer's Choice Grammar and Composition

1 spiral notebook for notes

Loose-leaf paper for vocabulary sentences and daily assignments

8th English Curriculum

Grammar: We will conduct and in-depth exploration of the eight parts of speech and their functions in a sentence through both grammar exercises and writing exercises.

Writing: We will be writing on a regular basis. Students will reinforce the writing process from prewriting to publishing, as well as identifying the six traits of writing in their own writing and in the writing of others.

Reading: We will read several books as a class including Touching Spirit Bear. There will be reading comprehension quizzes over the reading as well as writing assignments in the form of writing portfolios.

Vocabulary: Monday will be vocabulary day. Students will look up vocabulary words individually then present the words to the class. Contextual vocabulary sentences will be due on Wednesday. You will have a vocabulary quiz on the last day of the week.

Speech: You will write one speech and give it to the class. You will be graded on both the speech writing process and the speech delivery process. Eight of you will qualify to compete for a spot in the Woodmen Speech Competition. Good luck to all of you!
