11th English Curriculum

Grammar: We will do grammar exercises on common grammatical errors. We will work with grammar packets in preparation for the ACT. I will also address problems that we need to cover in your writing either individually or as a group if I see the problem cropping up frequently.

Reading: Junior English covers American literature. We will read from the anthology as well as several novels as a class, including the following: To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck), Boy's Life (Robert McCammon).

Vocabulary: Mondays will be vocabulary day. You will look up vocabulary words individually then present the words to the class. Contextual vocabulary sentences will be due on Wednesday. You will have a vocabulary quiz at the end of every week.

Writing: We will be writing an 8-10 page research paper during the course of the semester. The biggest part of this grade is on the research and writing process. You will have lots of classtime to write the paper so that I can help you with the writing process as much as possible. My advice to you is to use your time wisely. In addition to writing a research paper, the tests over the reading units are essay tests, so you will do a number of in-class essays as well. Finally, you can expect to write on a weekly basis--there will be something due, in writing, most every week.
